Nearby Attraction: Granville Island
Getting There by Transit: Many buses will bring you here from the downtown core along Howe Street, including the #98 B-line express and the #4, #7, #10, #16 and #50.
Parking: Parking can be at a premium along Granville, the side streets and pay parking options, particularly on weekends. Don’t even think about parking in Permit Only marked spots on the street. Try parking at either end of the strip (near West 5th or West 15th) rather than in the middle, or take transit or a cab.
Overview:
When locals talk about the South Granville shopping district, they’re not talking about the southernmost end of Granville Street, which runs all the way from downtown to the Fraser River. What they’re referring to is the 11-block strip of the street that starts at the south end of the Granville Street bridge, from West 5th to West 16th Ave.
The area has gone through many changes over the years. North of Broadway (which would be 9th Avenue, if it had a number rather than a name), Granville is often called Gallery Row, since it is home to a number of art galleries — too many to list here — and antique stores. More recently, it’s become something of a hub for furniture and home decor stores, most of which are clustered between West 5th and West 12th Avenues.
And while many independent stores flourish on the street, chain stores like Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, La Senza and Williams Sonoma have taken up residence in recent years. Still, the area hasn’t lost its neighbourhood feel.
If you’re planning to spend a few hours shopping here, you won’t go hungry — from sushi and burger joints to fine dining, you’re sure to find a restaurant to satisfy your palate, particularly on West Broadway, on either side of Granville. And of course, there’s no shortage of places to stop for coffee.
Close by and worth considering: At the starting point of the route, Granville at West 5th Ave., you’re just a short walk from Granville Island, which features a public market, numerous restaurants and bars, an incredible culinary school where you can enjoy a meal or baked goods prepared by the students, and a wonderful collection of galleries and artisans shops. It’s tucked away under the Granville bridge, just north of West 4th Ave.
