Shopping Walk: Robson Street

Shopping route: Robson Street

Known for: Major chain stores, restaurants and bars.

Starting point: Robson Street at the corner of Robson and Granville, and walking West

Nearby attractions: Stanley Park; Gastown

Getting there by transit: If you’re staying downtown, you’re probably within walking distance of Robson Street. The #5 Robson bus also runs right down the street, and dozens of buses will take you down Granville, Seymour or Burrard streets to Robson. As well, the Burrard and Vancouver City Centre rapid-transit stations are both about a five-minute walk away.

Overview: It’s hard to leave Robson Street off your Vancouver shopping itinerary — it’s mentioned in every guidebook and locals know it as the place to see a lot of fashion in a few short blocks, as well as a whole lot of fashionistas on the hunt. This area has more street energy than almost any other strip — day and night, it’s buzzing with a young and fashionable crowd, tourists and locals. You’ll find a lot of familiar names here as chain stores rule the roost; many have their Vancouver flagships outlets on Robson, including the Canadian Roots chain. You’ll find everything from retailers like Zara and Le Chateau, which specialize in trendy and budget-friendly fashions, to higher-end stores like BCBG Maxazria and A/X Armani Exchange, plus a few one-of-a-kind shops. And if all that shopping leaves you hungry or thirsty, there is no shortage of places to grab a drink, a casual snack or an elegant meal.

Close and worth considering: The Pacific Centre mall is on Robson Street’s doorstep, and a few chain stores — including The Gap, Banana Republic, Aritzia and Le Chateau — have outlets in both places. That may sound redundant, but if you find exactly what you’re looking for at a store on Robson Street but your size isn’t in stock, you’ve got a second chance in the mall just a couple of blocks away. Are we taking care of you or what?

Good to know: There’s metered parking on both sides of Robson Street, but good luck finding a spot, especially on evenings and weekends. You can try your chances on Alberni Street, which runs parallel to Robson to the north, where you’ll also find a couple of parking garages if you strike out searching for a metered spot. But given the easy access to bus routes and rapid transit, you might want to consider leaving the car at home.
