MORE Magazine Canada: In June 2008, MORE sent a journalist (Joanne Blain) and a photographer (Laurie Arsie) to Paris, to write an article about Chicwalks founder (Karen Henrich) and sister company, Nuit Blanche Tours (www.nuitblanchetours.com). The fantastic result is a 9 page, 21 photo, 1,800 word article in the April 2009 issue of More, pages 104-113, titled “The French Connection.”

Last fall two girlfriends and I treated ourselves to a private shopping guide for one day through Nuit Blanche Tours. Karen, the founder (also of www.Chicwalks.com), taught us how to find chic clothing at affordable prices. She knows how to find designer showrooms, off-the-beaten track boutiques and fashion-specific street markets. She introduced us to a great street "marche" in a residential section of southern Paris. The market is near the Convention Metro stop and operates in the street on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 9 AM to around 1 PM. Look for the stalls lining the streets selling food, flowers, clothes, shoes, bags and all sorts of things at very low prices. I bought a suede purse and shoes to match and a pair of jeans for just 4 euros. How do you know if they'll fit when you can't try them on? Karen showed me a trick that works! Put the waist around your neck and if it overlaps about an inch, the pants will fit. I also bought numerous unique and large scarves with appliques and embroidery. They made elegant birthday gifts for my girlfriends and I get loads of compliments every time I wear one of them. When people ask where I bought it, I reply, "Oh, I found it in a little street market in Paris!"

In June 2009, our Parisian film director friend, Romain Clement, of 2 Balles Productions created a 'film-ette' for us. The film was shot in the magnificent Jardin de Palais Royal near the Louvre, and Galerie Vivienne, a favorite Chicwalks.com shopping haunt. Many thanks to our 'l’homme à tout faire' (French for 'gopher') who carried heavy stuff for us throughout the day, thanks Wayne!

Want to know where the hot shopping spots are in Vancouver, but don't have time to research guidebooks or the Internet? A new application -- or app -- for iPhone and iPod Touch users, developed in Vancouver, might be able to help. Called "Chic Walks," the five-dollar, GPS-enabled app provides an interactive shopping tour guide of Vancouver -- complete with directions and maps.

As part of the Christmas spirit, here's an example of how, with a little creativity, anybody can adapt modern tools to grow a business.
Karen Henrich is the Vancouver and Paris based operator of ChicWalks, a new Vancouver shopping tour operation that was spun out of her Blanche Nuit touring company for women in Paris. Chicwalks provides tours of fashionable shopping areas and lists interesting merchants along the walks. It uses an advertising model to help shopkeepers who are confused by the way media has fractured in recent years.
